Noted Former Idahoan Dead
Grangeville, Dec. 7 – Relatives here learned today of the death Wednesday of John H. McEvers, 61, a prominent local and national figure. Death was the result of a cerebral hemorrhage suffered earlier in the week at his home at Kansas City, Mo.
A former assistant attorney general of the United States, Mr. McEvers was associated at the time of his death with the Kansas City law firm of Stimson, Mag, Thomson, McEvers & Fizzell.
Mr. McEvers was born March 30, 1890, at Camas, Wash., and came to Whitbird in 1904. He was graduated in 1911 from Grangeville high school and in 1916 from the University of Idaho law school. During World war I, he was a first lieutenant in the infantry.
While associated with Charles Horning in a law office at Wallace he was a deputy U.S. attorney at Boise and later served as attorney for the Oregon Short Line railroad at Pocatello.
Served Under Hoover
Mr. McEvers was married to Beatrice Hilton in 1926 at Pocatello. After their marriage, the couple moved to Washington, D.C., where he served as assistant U.S. attorney general during the administration of President Hoover. He joined the Kansas City law firm in 1933 as a junior partner.
One of his three sons, John Hilton McEvers, will assume his father’s position in the firm. Other survivors include, in addition to his wife and sons, a daughter; his mother, Mrs. Katherine McEvers, Grangeville; five brothers, Reuben, Sacramento, Calif., Grover, Whitebird; James and Ben, Orofino, and Joe, Ellensburg, Wash., and four sisters, Mrs. Mary E. Wilson, Palmdale, Calif.; Mrs. Laura G. Hazelbaker, Grangeville; Mrs. Myrtle Floch, Sacramento, and Mrs. Olive Winslow, Spokane.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow at Kansas City.
